Henry, T. D. (2011). Where i lived, and what i lived for. In S. Cohen, 50 Essays (pp. 403-409). Boston: Bedford St. Martins.
In the essay, “Where I Lived and
What I Lived For,” by Henry David Thoreau writes about his experience of living
in the woods away from society. He went
to live in the woods because he wished to live deliberately. All he wants was simplicity and the
essentials of life. Thoreau did not
liked railroads, post offices, and never read a newspaper. He found those kinds of technology to be
unnecessary. Enjoying his life out in
nature was his ideal way of life and the way he thinks how life should be like.
Social media and Thoreau’s points
are related. Nowadays, people are so
into technology and the Internet that they forget about the essence of
life. Those people think that the
Internet is their world now, and the real outside world in the wild is left
out. People can communicate easier and
faster, transportation is improving, and information gets out immediately. Social media has really influenced people in
a way that they don’t realize that is not good for them because it is taking
over their life. Yes, technology is the
most important thing in the century, but people abuse it, and if it continues
on, it will not turn out good.
