Video games have become very popular all over the world today. Not only kids play video games today, but people of all different ages play video games. Since video games has been so popular in today’s society, Steven Johnson worries about this situation. He wants to promote more reading instead of video games. In his essay, Johnson says that we should encourage younger children to read more, so they can have a better sense of reading and be more comfortable when they are approach to some sort of readings. Johnson mentioned Andrew Solomon’s analysis of people who read: they are more likely to go to museums, attend musical performances, volunteer within the community, do charity work, and attend sporting events than people who don’t read. He also mentioned that readers are more active than nonreaders who have settled into apathy.
People who play games a lot are similar to the people who used the internet very often. This leads them to a large use of social media. We can conclude that people who use social media are most likely to stay indoors and interact less with the outside world. Those people will also have had settled into apathy. This may not be a good thing because they have isolated themselves from society. Social media has a huge impact in today’s society that most people don’t know what is happening in their community unless the information is posted on Facebook, Twitter, etc. This sometimes is a good thing because the information will be passed around and people will get to see it. I agree with Johnson’s point because reading gives people more information; video games do not.
